Now I don’t know if you’ve been watching the news or what you’ve heard but on February 23rd the President’s administration will no longer defend DOMA. And then on March 3rd our new speaker of the house John Boehner (Who in my opinion is a damn cry baby, I mean he cries at everything) is now going to defend DOMA with the rest of the house republicans.
Last time I checked the Republicans have been using the phrase “The American People” and how they know what the people want and how the current administration doesn’t. Yet according to a FOX News survey, “reducing unemployment” and “reducing the budget deficit” are the most important things on the American peoples mind.¹
Not only are the Republicans defending a discriminatory law they are blatantly going against what the American people really want. My question is what happened to actually LISTENING to the people and not ASSUMING what we all want. Now I know there are people out there who will defend them till the end and say that we need DOMA for (insert some lame excuse here). Great, good you them, but let’s take away the fact that you may not like LGBT people and add in the fact that you (and me) have no idea how much tax payer money is going to fund their stupidity. Especially since there are 9, yes count them, 9 cases challenging the constitutionally of DOMA spanning 3 appellate courts and 4 district courts in 6 states.²
The HRC President Joe Solmonese sums it up quite nicely: “With today’s vote, Speaker Boehner has made clear that an anti-equality agenda trumps helping American families in tough economic times, including loving and committed couples who are legally married in their states.”³
And another question; Do they really think they’re going to win?? Especially given that in 2 DOMA-related cases in Massachusetts, a federal judge (appointed by President Nixon no less) has already found Section 3 of DOMA to be unconstitutional.
These Republicans really need to just give up and do what they said they were going to do; get more jobs and lower the deficit. How hard is that to focus on?

Defense of Marriage Act defines marriage as the union between one man and one woman. Last time I looked, the majority of Americans agree with that definition.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, the people of California voted on that issue not too long ago. What was unconstitutional was a judge overruling the people's opinion because he didn't agree with it.
What's really unconstitutional is that LGBT people don't have the same rights as everyone else. And that's all I'm going to say on the subject because I see no reason to get into an argument over something that I feel neither one of us will see the other side on.

ReplyDeleteKeeping the definition of marriage does not deny LGBT people rights. The objection to redefining definitions in laws is that it will never end- today we expand the definition of marriage to one man and one man or one woman and one woman...next year polygamists will cry WHERE'S OUR RIGHTS?!
What's needed for the small minority of Americans such as same sex couples is new laws to protect their partnership for such things as medical decisions and inheritance issues.
